Coats of Arms - An Introduction

Heraldry has existed as a means of identification from the early Middle Ages and was well established in Scotland by the 13th century. The office of Lord Lyon King of Arms has existed since at least the 14th century. Coats of arms are granted by the Lord Lyon King of Arms and recorded in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland, established in 1672. An applicant must be of upright standing and domiciled in Scotland or in one of the countries of the Commonwealth which does not have their own heraldic authority (England and Canada have heraldic authorities).

Sometimes it is possible for descendents of Scots to arrange for a posthumous Grant of Arms in memory of that ancestor. There is no necessity for an individual to own a large estate or be a successful professional person. It is not necessary to have a long recorded pedigree. Many people from all walks of life seek Arms because they have an interest in genealogy or enjoy heraldic art.

A coat of arms consists of a shield, and there may be a crest and motto. The shield, often mistakenly called a crest, is the identifying part. To acquire new Arms a simple Petition is presented to the Lord Lyon. In general the basic design of the Arms will be similar to those of other people of the same surname and to this design will be added other symbols identifying the individual. These symbols should be as relevant to future generations as they are to the present. Arms are granted with a destination indicating who may succeed to those Arms. The heir succeeds to the shield without difference and a junior member of the family to those Arms with a minor addition, known as a cadency difference. Thus, no two people at any time bear the same coat of arms.

There is no such thing as a "family coat of arms" which all people of the same surname or within the same family may use. Arms only descend to those people who bear the same surname. Arms can be acquired when an individual is connected to someone with the same surname who already bears Arms. The applicant must lodge proof (normally birth, death and marriage certificates) of their connection with that ancestor or relation. Even if the Arms were granted 200 or 300 years ago, modern genealogical tracing methods make this of great interest and hopefully not too difficult. Arms can be granted to men and women and to corporate bodies such as firms and schools. Once recorded, they are protected under the Law of Scotland and any infringement of the armorial rights may be investigated by the Procurator Fiscal to Lyon Court.

Armstrong Clan Society Coat of Arms

On September 24, 1984 the Lord Lyon, King of Arms granted warrant to the Lyon clerk to matriculate in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland in the name of Armstrong Clan Society, Inc. "acting world-wide and in particular within the United States of America" to further the interests of the Armstrong family. Matriculated in the 8th day of February 1985 in the 110th page of the 62nd volume of the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland. Description of the Armstrong Clan Society Arms "Argent, three pallets Azure, on a chief of the First a pale of the Second charged of a saltire on the first between two books expanded Gules binding and fore edges of the second, and in an Escro1 below the same this motto: 'Semper Invictus' (Always Unconquered)".

Translated, the shield is based on Armstrong of Mangerton (first Laird, Alexander living in 1200 AD). In the Chief (the area of the two books) the saltire (Cross of Saint Andrew and Patron Saint of Scotland) portrays our Scottish Heritage. The First book describes the recordings of historical, literary, cultural and genealogical records and documents pertaining to Clan Armstrong and related families. The second book relates to a register of ALL Armstrongs and their descendants throughout the world, and includes septs: Crosier, Fairbairn, Grozier, and Nixon (regardless of spelling).
