Genealogy - Using Blogs for Research

Introduction: A blog is a simple web site that one can access through the Internet. The difference between blogs and most other web sites is the way the information is organized. Blogs feature short articles or "postings". Postings, or posts, are dated and ordered chronologically. Optional comments to the posts from readers are amended to the posts. Sidebars on the sides of the posts can provide additional information. Photos or details about the blog author; a listing of recent posts, posts' title or subject; and links to other blogs or web sites. Blogs can also offer a "search" function to help you find topics or keywords of interest.

Scottish Blogs: Perhaps one of the best blogs for Scottish genealogy, news and such is, www.ScottishAncestry.blogspot.com . Posts occur almost every day. Assorted news items can help one stay current on the latest happenings in Scottish genealogy. Posts discuss topics such as; new digitized burial records, new DNA projects, regional Scottish roots festivals, and links to National Archives podcasts. Professional genealogists blogs include The Scottish Genealogy Blog, www.scotgen.blogspot.com and vww.setait.blogspot.com . For Scots heraldry one can visit www.scotsheraldry.com .

Scottish clan societies, family history groups, and other niche interest groups have discovered that blogs are an efficient way to communicate with members. One such blog site is Scott Clan News, http://scottclannews.blogspot.com. Other Scottish themed sites include blogs by travel writers. Helpful, perhaps, when planning a research trip, or simply enjoyable, especially viewing photos as a "virtual" vacation. Some examples are: Living with Clans and Castles, http://alastaircunningham07.blogspot.com , and Extra Miles Scotland, www.extramilescotland.co.uk/blog.asp .

Some Genealogy Blogs: In addition to Scottish blogs are many excellent blogs about general genealogy. Some include; http://www.rootstelevision.com/blogs/megans-rootsworld.php ; www.genealogue.com ; an online genealogy newsletter, http://blog.eogn.com http://blog.dearmyrtle.com ; and Ancestry.com's Family History Circle, http://blogs.ancestry.com/circle .

Subscribing to and Finding new Blogs: If you want to visit a blog site regularly one can subscribe to your favorite blog's "Web feed" also called the "RSS feed". You should receive a notice of content updates to the blog. Look for the blog's "Subscribe" button or link for more information. One must use good judgment and common sense in evaluating blogs, just as you do with any information source. So, how do you find more blogs? Genealogy blogs can keep you busy for a very long time. A couple of sites to locate more blogs include: http://blogfinder.genealogue.com and http://paperangels.googlepages.com/genealogy_blogs. Another option is to go to your internet search site and enter key words of interest, adding the word "blog". Examples are "Scotland blog", "Scottish genealogy blog", or a particular surname or region with "blog". Google offers a “Blog Search” feature at www.blogsearch.google.com  and  Google Alerts at www.google.com/alerts where one can setup to receive an email each time your search words appear in a blog or in news or web sites.

Creating Your Own Blog: So you want to begin writing your own blog, or you belong to a group that is eager to give blogs a try. It's not necessary to hire expensive web experts. If you have internet access, know how to send email and perform basic computer functions, then you should be able to create and maintain a blog. Blogging software and services are available to walk you through the blog creation process. You may be up and blogging in a matter of minutes. Some of the most popular choices include: Google's Blogger, www.blogger.com,  People Connection, http://peopleconnection.aol.com/blogs,  Live Journal, www.livejourna1.com, Word Press, www.wordpress.org, and Type Pad, www.typepad.com .
