Glasgow Highland GamesGlasgow, KY

2007  A warm spring day with cooling breezes welcomed those attending the Glasgow Games this year.  Due to a very busy spring schedule, Janet and I were considering not hosting a tent here this year, but when we considered the enthusiasm shown by  Janet Lawrence at these games last year we made up our minds to attend. And a great decision it was! Janet and her granddaughter joined us for most of the day. Piper Alan and wife, Anita, were also here for the day. Alan won another Gold medal in piping (see picture below). We had the great honor to attending the hand fasting of longtime ACS supporter Beth Gay and Tom Freeman (see pictures below). Several other members visited and talked for a  while.

Sadly, there were no dancing of any type this year. We were told this was due to illness of a key dance organizer from Louisville, KY. This reinforces the fact that we need to work hard to avoid single point failures in your organization and that means more participation by our membership (you) is needed.

Both of these ACS items are passed on to the current president.

2006     The Glasgow Highland Games were held on June 2 - 4, 2006. ACS President Bill his wife Janet and ACS VP Joe Wiggington shared tent duties. Joe was so anxious to visit these games that he drove 10 hours each way from Maryland. Joe had lunch with the Chief and enjoyed several evening concerts. This was the first tent hosted at these large games in recent years. Our tent was in an ideal location, on a corner close to entertainment, "street performers", facilities, and refreshments. Glasgow is located in a very scenic part of the state near Mammoth Cave National Park and a great location for a long weekend.

We all had the honor, and pleasure, of meeting the lovely Margaret Frances Boswell of  Redheugh, 29th Chief of Clan Elliot. You will remember that the Elliots were close allies with the Armstrongs during the reiving times.

Very proud events took place on the piping fields. ACS piper Anne, with the Knoxville Pipes Band, took second place in the very competitive Grade Five competition.  A very proud ACS piper Alan and his wife Anita  joined us at the tent in the late afternoon. Alan was wearing three medals. After medalling in Gatlinburg a few weeks earlier, Alan won (G3): First place in Piobaireachd; Second place in 2/4 March; and Second place in Strathspey and Reel. Later  he was awarded G3 Piper of the Day.  An outstanding achivement and well deserved we are sure. Congratulate Alan next time you see him.
