Ligonier Highland Games

(East of Pittsburgh, PA)

2008 Annual General Meeting was held in conjunction with these games. Weather was cool and damp. Attendance was good. President Joe continued his streak of having heavy rain at all the games where he and Tonya hosted a tent. As Joe began the AGM business the sky opened up with heavy rain for most of the meeting. We all came prepared and none were wetted excessively. A report from the ACS Secretary will be sent to the membership in the newsletter.   Idelwild Park is an amusement park in a very heavily wooded area. Lots of interesting attractions and picnic areas. Seems like a great place to visit in the spring and summer. Clan Donald sponsors this gathering and did a great job with the games and the entertainment following the games. Special thanks to Joe King, a professional photographer, for these pictures.

2007  By Joe Wiggington, 2008 - 2009 ACS President

On Saturday, September 8th the weatherman predicted scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Laurel Highlands of PA, but the Pipes & Drums several hundred strong kept the sky dry all day at the 49th annual Ligonier Highland Games.  Idlewild Park is a beautiful location for a Highland Games, located approximately 50 miles east of Pittsburgh, PA, and the small town of Ligonier opens its doors to welcome all comers.  This will be a wonderful site for the 2008 Armstrong AGM.

Our tent was very busy with current, former, and future members stopping by just thrilled to see us.  One Armstrong family traveling to Scotland next year greatly appreciated learning more about Langholm and the Reiver Trail.  They will spend three days in the Borders after the conclusion of their guided tour.  We were able share pictures or our recent trip to the Borders and answer many questions about car hire, lodging, what to pack, places not to miss, VAT, etc.  We later received the nicest email thanking us for all the information.

Perhaps the most encouraging thing to emerge was the number of  bairns that took a great interest in hearing about their heritage -not to mention being allowed to alternate carrying the Armstrong banner during the Clan parade- and returning later proudly displaying an Armstrong clan crest or kilt pin purchased by mom and/or dad.   So everyone needs to plan now for ACS Annual General Meeting here in Sept of 2008 (and be sure to book rooms in Ligonier now so you can be very close to everything).
