President's Page

Spring is finally here!  After a winter full of worries and woes (if you follow the news) it’s time to get up, get out, and get going.  2009 promises to be an exciting year for us with all the Homecoming events in Scotland as well as our own Gathering in Charleston, SC in September.  You’ll find details of what’s planned for our Charleston Gathering elsewhere in this issue.  It’s my hope that everyone will make this great event a part of their summer travel plans as it promises to be a weekend full of fun, entertainment and memories.  As an added bonus, Micheil Armstrong of Mungbyhurst, Chairman of the Armstrong Clan Trust will be traveling from his home in South Africa to be our guest of honour.  In addition, many special archives belonging to the Society as well as some special items from the Armstrong Museum in Langholm, Scotland will be on display.  So if you can’t get to Scotland we’ll bring a wee bit of it to you.

Please allow me to take a moment and extend a big thank you to some of our members for their invaluable services.  First, to all the conveners and hosts of the Armstrong Clan tent at various festivals and games across the country-  Slainte! You did a great job last year and I’m sure this year will be even more rewarding and successful.  Second, Bill has finished the updates and revisions to the Society By-laws which will be submitted for approval at the AGM in September.  After seeing how much work he put in I can only say- Great Job.  Larry and Carol Armstrong have been a great help to me as VP and Secretary both with their input as well as support.  I hope I can be as much as an asset to Larry next year as Bill has been to me.  Libby Bova and Marsha Long have got the ball rolling on the new Genealogical committee and will have a report on their progress at the AGM.  Finally, Peter has done a tremendous amount of leg work organizing the events for our weekend in Charleston.  He’s putting together the banquet, organizing tourist events, and coordinating on our behalf much of the detail work for the AGM and Honored Clan events.  Not to mention he’s the Festival Pipe Band director.  Knowing how the busy get busier,  I wonder if he’ll also be parking cars, taking up tickets at the front gate, and picking up trash after the Festival closes.  Peter truly is an asset to our Society and I have been very fortunate to have him beside me as Treasurer and Membership Secretary.  To all these fine folks please allow me to buy you a wee dram in Charleston.
