The 2006 ACS Educational Scholarships Awards
ACS Scholarship Recipient,
Caroline Recipient of US $1000.00 ACS
Scholarship is Caroline. Caroline is living with her parents this
summer in Boulder, CO. She received a Bachelors Degree (with Honors)
in Celtic Studies from a prestigious university in Nova Scotia. She
was on the Dean’s List for her first three years. In addition, she
was awarded First Class Honors in May 2005. Her Honors Thesis was
titled “Science in Gaelic Medium Education”. While working on her B.A.
Caroline was active in many Celtic activities including: the
University Celtic Society; A two hour Celtic music radio show;
International Student Society; member of a famous Celtic Choir; and
ran a study group for Gaelic Students. She also gives private Gaelic
lessons Caroline will be attending
the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland in August for a one
year Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary) Gaelic. This
is a one-year teacher-training course. Upon completion of her studies,
Caroline plans to pursue employment as a Gaelic Medium (emersion)
teacher. She wrote in her letter of introduction accompanying her
application, that Scotland is using Medium Schools as the main focus
in the plan to revitalize the Gaelic language. Currently, there are
not sufficient teachers to fill the need. She feels that this is a
great opportunity for her to work with Gaelic and help preserve a
major part of Scottish culture. Note: Primary and Medium in Canada and Scotland refer to what we in the USA call Elementary and Middle Schools respectively. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
ACS Scholarship Recipient, Brooke Recipient of a US $ 500.00 ACS Scholarship is Brooke. Brooke resides in Batesville, Arkansas and is a Junior and at Lyon College also in Batesville. She has a Secondary Education Concentration with a double major in French and English. She participates in a Scottish Heritage Program, Phi Mu, the Campus Ministry Board and Social Council. Brooke also enjoys and instructs Highland Dance, Scottish Country Dance, and, as can be seen in her photograph, playing the Celtic Harp. In her spare time she does a little theater work. Brooke is also a recipient of a substantial annual Scottish Heritage Program Scholarship and an annual Dean’s Scholarship. Since 2005, Brooke chaired the Highland Dance competition at the Arkansas Scottish Festival. In the Spring 2007, her French studies will focus on the Celtic area of France, Brittany, where she will attend school and study. She is very interested in studying French folk dance, which has been influenced by Highland dance. Investigating that linkage is a passion of hers. Brooke had the honor of dancing at the opening of the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Library. --------------------------------------------------------------- ACS
Scholarship Recipient, Rosalie
Rosalie is a recipient of a US $500.00 ACS Scholarship. Rosalie was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada
to James and Barbara, (nee Cameron). Following a short period of
living on the "Island", the family moved back to Nova
Scotia, where James' family has Rosalie attended a prestigious University in Nova Scotia receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English, with Honors, (First Class) in 1992. She was a Dean’s List student her entire studies and was a Governor General Medallist. She continued her studies at the University and received a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) in 1993. She received a Bachelor of Laws from another excellent Nova Scotia University in 1998. Rosalie is currently studying for her Masters degree in Labor Relations and Employment Law at York University in Toronto. She currently lives in Ottawa with her husband, Adam, and her 20-month-old son, Joseph. New 8 Aug 2006 |
