2006

The ACS continues to support these games with our tent and individual sponsorships. This year was a little damp but from previous rains. The effort paid off for Dr. Alan Armstrong, one of our clan pipers, who won first place in the G3 Piobaireachd. In addition, another ACS piper Anne, of Knoxville, TN competed with the Knoxville Pipes and Drums.

Dr. Alan Armstrong, one of our clan pipers, who won First Place / Gold Medal in                 Grade 3 Piobaireachd.

Can you find ACS piper Anne in the massed bands?

2004

The ACS tent was once again present at the Gatlinburg, Tennessee Highland Games held on May 14 – 16, 2004 in Mills Park. These games are held at “The Gateway to the Smokey Mountains” near the entrance to the Smokey Mountains National Park. The weather was remarkably nice, cool and dry with a “Saltire Blue” sky.

While walking from the parking level down to the games field, Janet and Bill Armstrong noticed a pair of crossing jet contrails in the sky. These white contrails on the deep blue sky background seemed to welcome us to the games by forming a Scottish flag (the Saltire). Note: “Contrails” is a contraction of “Condensation Trails”. Contrails are formed when high speed aircraft travel through moist air condensing it and forming the “white lines” in the sky that follow the air craft. We are very pleased that ACS President Beverly Meyers and her husband Terry drove in from the Cincinnati Ohio area to attend these games.

After the games closed on Saturday, the Armstrong Clan invaded a local restaurant for refreshment, food, and as always camaraderie. A great time was had by all. Instead of Armstrong reiving and looting, it was reported that a large sum of money seemed to “disappear” at the many shops and the outlet malls in the area

If you haven’t been to these superbly located games, you need to plan to visit them next year. If you have been – Y’all come back, y’hear ?
